1. Birth and Childhood of a Rebellious Spirit
Born as Rajneesh Chandramohan Jain on 11 December 1931, Osho spent his early years in the loving care of his grandparents, an experience he holds dear and reflects upon fondly in his book, Glimpses of a Golden Childhood. During this time, he enjoyed a remarkable freedom that shielded him from the constraints imposed by societal institutions such as schools. It was during these formative years that Osho's inquisitive and rebellious nature began to emerge and nurture, fearlessly questioning social norms and dogmas.
In his childhood, Osho had profound experiences, which left a lasting impact on him, such as the death of his grandfather at the age of 7. He engaged in various activities that showcased his adventurous and daring spirit, such as swimming in flooded rivers and jumping off a 100-ft bridge. He also developed a love for reading books and engaging in debates on controversial topics, even with individuals much older than him, including his parents.

Osho's critical mindset extended to the school environment, where he challenged and defied the rules, often finding himself at odds with teachers, parents, and friends. His powerful personality and argumentative nature often led others to avoid confrontation with him. Despite his rebellious reputation, Osho excelled in his education, achieving top marks and receiving a gold medal for his master's degree from the University of Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. He was even offered a position as a philosophy professor at Jabalpur University.
This rebellious and inquisitive spirit that characterized Osho's birth and childhood set the foundation for his later spiritual journey. It ignited a thirst for truth and a relentless pursuit of the beyond, which would shape his teachings and inspire countless seekers around the world in days to come.
